College Life Changes, Described by a Frosh This week, I am fulfilling my dream of taking over the Admissions page with a series of six consecutive posts. I am calling the takeover Yultide (credit to the bloggers for the awesome name). Today is Yultide Day 3. Check out Day 1 Sketches from the Independent Activities Period and Day 2 Just 41 Pictures I Took in 2017.   Note: Part 1 of this post is from a never-published draft about from my freshman fall 2014. Part 2 is from freshman spring 2015. Senior winter 2018, I do not endorse all of the views expressed here. __________________________________   Part 1: Freshman Fall I’ve only been here for a semester, but things have changed in life. For example, I realized how little I know and how uncertain my plans are. It’s a fascinating revelation. Senior year of high school, I thought I knew how to handle life. In fact, I had a clear vision in mind of what I wanted to do. I expected to learn more about the field I’d already chosen for college. Then MIT destroyed those misconceptions, for good. I look back on my fall classes and sometimes shudder at how little I learned. It doesn’t feel like much, but I think that’s because classes here do not teach formulas, but rather teach concepts and open up new paths. It’s horrifying sometimes to think how much knowledge there is in the world and how little I can access in a lifetime, let alone four academic years. I am grateful to MIT because it has shown me those new paths, allowed me to marvel at the complexity of modern science. Knowing little has driven me to know more. The best I can do now is take tiny experimental steps to figure out the most sturdy foundation. There are 2,000 possible classes, and although I would love to take all of them, four classes per semester is my limit, so, really, I can take very few. [Editors Note: I cannot believe I wanted to take 2,000 classes, but I think I really did mean it at the time.] My favorite learning experiences have been in the company of my peers. Perhaps my favorite kitchen conversation was one about algebraic field extensions. We found their analogy to human relationships. I did not have much background in the subject, but I loved it. I learned something amazing that eveningâ€"not the only time I discovered so much from my friends. College changes things, but the biggest changes are often imperceptible. I discover them on trips back home, when I can no longer go to bed earlier than 1am, and waking up at 7am seems like a cruel practice [Editor’s Note: 1am, psh, that’s practically a high schoolers bed time]. I feel a separation from my permanent address in Ohioâ€"when I visit, I realize that I’ll never catch up with the latest news. Part 2: Freshman Spring I have been here for a semester and a half. In three weeks, I will need to declare a (yet nonexistent) major. I must find summer employment, which I have decided to seek on campus because here, now, is my homeâ€"imperfect, busy, but totally comfortable. I shudder at the thought of an independent three-month “vacation,” but also think of future days at MIT without homework as thrilling. I’ve also had to deal with personal matters: a friend left on leave, bonds broken, food patterns reduced to a combination of powders and cans, laundry and cleaning chores cluttering the day and often dismissed until the last pair of underwear disappears into the laundry bag. [Editors Note: I have since switched to a combination of steamed and frozen foods and smoothies. I have also bought more underwear.] I thought I hadn’t learned a ton academically. Turns out, that wasn’t true. Over spring break, I spent three days at my old high school for an assignment for 11.125 Evaluating Educationâ€"I had to observe and/or teach 20 hours of a science class. When I got up to review Newton’s Laws with the freshman physics class, it was as if I was speaking about old friends. I’d been terrified of physics in high school, but visiting from college, I was enchanted by it. I wanted the students to know how I felt, how marvelously physics displays itself in nature, beyond the formulas and laws. Every flower, unicorn, and dagger yield to Newton’s Third Law. [Editors Note: Adorable. Editors Note 2: This was before I took Physics II: Electromagnetism.] Outside of academics, I’ve made more of life-changing decisions this year than during all of high school. College forced me to take care of myself when I fucked up, and learn from mistakes, too. I had to search for new options, and pursue them. And if the choices were unclear or not yet attainable, I invaded my friend’s room to seek refuge on her couch and figure out steps towards recovery. An hour of a friend’s time can save someone’s world. Sometimes, this place is still tough. Then I need to give myself time to heal, and then spring up, hopefully before work is due, to continue, and maybe fuck up again, and once more discover the best alternative. Just as I’ve discovered my ignorance, so have I realized the ambiguity of the future. But there is one thing that’s constantâ€"even if it feels like MIT is a hostile alien world, I can always talk to those whove already adjusted to the new terrain. In 21M.600 Intro to Acting, we were taught to notice our classmates’ “spheres of energy,” and be mindful of our own as well. In real life, I think it means that sometimes its hard to admit that you need help, but it’s easy to feel alone. This semester, I learned to let my friends provide expert advice. Nepal has experienced earthquake shocks in the previous years, for instance; in 1934, Nepal was hit by the worst earthquake that left thousands of people dead and others displaced. Nepal earthquake of 2015 was a major tremor that occurred on two phases and left thousands of people dead and thousands homeless. The first phase happened on 25th April 2015, whereas, the second phase happened on 12th may 2015.The first phase of April 2015 Nepal earthquake happened at around 11:56 am NST and struck the area between Kathmandu and Pokhara (Mitra et al, 2015). According to the United State Geological Survey, the earthquake originally had a magnitude7.5 which later upgraded to 7.8 (Gov.UK, 2015). The earthquake epicentre was 77km north-west of Ka thmandu, the capital city of Nepal. This was the most powerful natural disaster to strike Nepal since 1934 Nepal-Bihar earthquake. The Nepal-Bihar earthquake had a magnitude of 8.1. The United State Geological Survey asserts that tremor was caused by sudden thrust along the major fault line of the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. The intensity in Kathmandu was IX, which was violent in nature (AydanUlusay, 2015).The April 25th Nepal earthquake triggered a major avalanche on the slope of Mount Everest killing some people and left others injured. The earthquake also triggered an enormous avalanche in the Langtang valley, where nearly 250 people went missing. In addition, the old building and monument at UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley were also brought down by the strong earthquake shocks that struck Nepal in 2015. The April Nepal earthquake experienced aftershock of a magnitude of 6.7 on 26th April 2015. It had an epicentre situated 17 km south of Kodari, Nepa l. The death toll rose to approximately eight thousand people and left thousands homeless (Gov.UK, 2015)The second phase of Nepal 2015 earthquake tremor took place on 12th may 2015. The earthquake occurred weeks later after the phase had taken place. The earthquake destroyed the buildings and other monument that had survived the previous earthquake. It happened at 12:50 pm local time with a moment magnitude of 7.3, it took place18 kilometres south-east of Kodari. The earthquake befell on the same fault line far east than the initial tremor in April. The Nepal Army together with Indian Army continued its Operation SankatMochan to aid relief and rescue mission to the stranded population (Mitra et al, 2015). In totality, the earthquake shocks killed approximately more than eight thousand people and destroying a half a million homes nationwide.In the management of Nepal earthquake 2015, Nepalese Army was sent in the areas that had been struck by the earthquake together with the voluntee rs from other parts of the country, under Operation SankatMochan. India being Nepal's immediate neighbour was the first to respond to the earthquake that struck Nepal, with Operation Maitri by the armed forces which offered rescue and relief to its own citizen and other people of other country who were stranded. The Nepalese government had requested for helicopters assistance from other nationals for the evacuation process.On May 1st, evacuation of the critically injured person was started by international aid agencies such as Medecins Sans Front ieres (Doctors without borders) and the Red Cross. The international aid agencies made mobile camps where they offered medication to individuals who had minor injuries. Emergency workers were also able to identify and rescue the people who were trapped in the rubble. Emergency workers were venerable in disaster management because of their intense commitments and emotional involvement (Emergency Management Australia, 2003). The emergency workers used heartbeat detection to identify the trapped persons.World Health Organisation and health partners have also taken part in the management of the catastrophic event of Nepal 2015 earthquake by helping the government to resume its services in rebuilding the damaged and destroyed health facility. Furthermore, they started rehabilitation centres for spinal and orthopaedic injuries (World Health Organisation, 2015). British aid also provided vital shelter kits that assist thousands of families and communities that were left homeless following the Nepal 2015 earthquake.The community also had a role in disaster management by being ethical during and after the disaster took place. Communities depict ethics during the recovery period through positive conducts and the moral judgement that help restore the mind of the people who were affected in the catastrophic event (Lateef, 2011),After the aftermath of the earthquake, the government set long-term policy and strategy on disaster management that is, Nepal Earthquake Recovery Appeal (NERA) 2015 that directs donations on small non-governmental organisations and the upcoming organisation that help create a network on the relief effort through channel of funds and exchange of information (Marston, 2015). Generally, small grassroots organisation offer support in rebuilding the communities that had been hit by Nepal 2015 earthquake by providing food, healthcare, sanitation and shelter.Q2Disaster management should include administrative decisions and operational International risk m anagement standards which provide a set of principles, frameworks and processes to enhance ways individuals and organisations manage risk. It requires an individual or an organisation to work smarter in dealing with a disaster which posts a lot of challenges when they occur. In Nepal, the principles of disaster management were not excepted from been used. They were applied before, during and after the earthquake occurred.A disaster can be prepared for before it happens. According to(Lateef, 2011) preventive ethics, for instance, preparedness is a basic tool to manage a situation.The readiness can be achieved from different angles. First perspective is through offering educational training (Lateef, 2011). This training is commonly adequate if realistic scenarios are encouraged. In Nepal, 2015 earthquake was not the first one to happen. There were scenarios Nepalese government would have learnt from. (Gibson Tarrant, 2010) added by saying that being prepared will give an individual t he ability to recognise precedence, what is happening and foresight what could probably occur. A person who is prepared can manage to identify early warning indicators and analyse possible options to deal with it. Secondly, the occurrence of an earthquake does not happen overnight. There are signs that are evident or which can be seen and these make pre- predictionspossible. Meteorologists do help in preparedness by studying the weather. Through their studying process, they can be able to predict the future outcome thus posting early warnings. According to (Bradtet el., 2009), disaster warnings should be communicated clearly through normal vulnerability channels and in a suitable manner to enhance understanding. In Nepal, seismic geologists had warned on the oncoming earthquake. They had even pinpointed the exact zone where it would take place( Petroff Rooney, 2015). Nepal Government preparedness measures though not fully. Through preparedness, effective decisions are made thus min imising the mortality rate and maximising the available resources.According to Emergency Management Australia (2003) , coordination is necessary for managing a disaster.This brings in working harmony under one command to achieve one goal of controlling the situation. Goyet (2000) suggested that affected regions appreciate the external assistance which does a lot of good to them. This is clearly seen in Nepal where many government agencies, companies and non-profit organisations sent their assistance aid. According to (PetroffRooney, 2015) Facebook came up with Safety Check tools urging Nepal residents to click in letting their friends know they are okay. Google revived the person finder tools which would enable people to post missing persons from Nepal. Microsoft also participated by offering free Skype calls in and out of Nepal. Nepalese Army was sent in the area together with Humanitarians from all over the word, under Operation SankatMochan. Operation Maitri, from India, offer ed rescue and relief not only to its citizens but also to other national citizens. Rescue mission helicopters came from the United States and China as per the request of the Nepal government.Medical field did participate in Nepal earthquake management. Qualified and experienced medical personnel were sent to the affected zone of Nepal to provide best medical services to those affected either directly or indirectly. One of the main objective of medicalpersonnel during disaster, is to respond quickly when an emergencyoccur. They attending to the victims and offering them quickmedical care that saves life (Gunn Masellis, 1996). The personnel in Nepal operated under some principles and harmony. We first start seeing power affecting Macbeth’s morals in the ending of Act I when the promise of power makes Macbeth think about killing the king. Macbeth has just finished having a nice dinner with the King and he is rethinking his plan of killing the king. We see him try to pull away from the idea of killing the king and wanting to stay an honest man. He is arguing with Lady Macbeth to not kill the king because â€Å"the king has just honored me†, â€Å"We can’t go on with this plan.† Macbeth wants to stay respectful and honest, he feels guilty to think about killing the king because the king thinks so highly of him. Tiffany is the key to Pat learning to move forward and away from his past, but Tiffany herself as many issues to work through. When we first meet Tittany it is clear that while sne is still troubled and broken, sne is determined to move forward in life and forgive her own mistakes. She has learned to accept herself at this point, flaws and all, even if she doesn’t necessarily have a great opinion of herself. Tiffany is an extremely strong woman though. She has accepted herself and therefore refuses to apologize or make excuses for her sadness and what actions manifest from it. Tiffany has sunken into a deep depression following the death of her husband. The movie gave a detailed look into Tiffanys illness, and yet never outright names what can be deduced as depression. The movie alludes that there is something besides depression that plagues her. It tells of the side effect, which with Tiffany suffers the most from. The disorder instigates her sex drive to turn on and off. Just before her husbands passing this was negatively affecting her marriage. Following his death, Tiffany misguides her guilt into a self-absorbed lifestyle of promiscuity. Preceding the movie, Tiffany is fired from her Job for having ex with everyone she works with. It is shown in the movie how men still show up at her parent’s front door in attempts to â€Å"get-together† with her. Her family suffers from the shame as the town garners glaring repugnance towards Tiffanys actions. We are shown the pained and humiliated looks on her parent’s faces as her â€Å"suitors† come knocking at their door looking for her. Tiffany still goes about her business in a completely unabashed way which emphasizes the chronic emptiness that has been consuming her. It is when Pat witnesses what these men are there for that something s done about it. This scene depicts Pats reaction, in which he sends them away and is outraged that these men could seek to use this nice girl for their own gratification. As Tiffany eavesdrops she observes Pats high opinion of her, which is something she hasn’t had for awhile and his regard for her advances her own for herself. As mentioned earlier Tiffany shows apparent symptoms of depression. Even before the death of her husband she was suffering from the DSM-IV TR symptoms of depressed mood and a decreased interest and pleasure, which had greatly affected her marriage. But it is her subsequent actions that make us seek another diagnosis. As Tiffany opens up to Pat we learn that she has a history of extreme emotional reactions, unstable interpersonal relationships, difficulty controlling anger, and impulsive sexual activity. These are DSM-IV criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder. Depression and Borderline Personality Disorder do work hand and hand, so the comorbidity of these disorders is not surprising. There is a scene between Pat and Tiffany where Tiffany plainly demonstrates the act of â€Å"splitting†. Splitting is also alled black and white thinking, which is when a person with Borderline Personality Disorder can only see things as an ideal or the epitome of wrong with no leeway in- between. Identity Disturbance is one of the nine criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder in the DSM-IV and is apparent in Tiffany. The way that she reacts after hearing Pats opinion of her, allows a look in to the distorted and bleak self-view that she has of herself. She becomes close to Pat and the movie depicts how she avoids any possibility that Pat could get back with his ex wife. She doesn’t want to risk him bandoning her. This frantic effort to avoid abandonment is yet another criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder. She is open with Pat about how she has been on medication and how she is in therapy, but right up to the end of the movie we are still lett witn a sense that Tittany still needs a lot ot work to get to a healthy place. Long-term Psychotherapy is generally the clearest route to take when it comes to Borderline Personality Disorder. Medications also help with these disorders by tackling comorbid depression with antidepressants, the paranoia with antianxiety edications and the use of mood stabilizers to help with impulsions and anger. It is said that the medications should be directed at the comorbid symptoms rather than at the borderline personality disorder and its own symptoms, as it is unnecessary to treat the disorder with medication on its own. So in the case of Tiffany I believe it is prudent to medicate her but have the medication be directed at her depression in hopes to stabilize her moods. I agree with the fact that she has been on medication, but I do believe that intense psychotherapy for her Borderline Personality Disorder is eeded. The movie may have ended happy but she still needs a lot of work in terms of how she processes and regulates her emotions. Dialectal Behavioral Therapy is a form of Psychotherapy that focuses in on regulation of emotions through Cognitive Behavioral techniques. The therapy combines the Cognitive Behavior Techniques which help emotions regulation and Reality Testing which focuses on distress tolerance, acceptance and mindful awareness. It is a therapy derived from Buddhist meditation. I believe that the two components of this therapy, individual and group, ill benefit Tiffany in the way of her becoming mindful of others and accepting of herself. It is the most effective form of treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder today and therefore is what I would suggest in regards to long-term therapy for Tiffany. The movie leaves us with open eyes toward the idiosyncrasies in people. It highlights how common mental illness is in the eccentrics of its entire cast.
